No one is forcing you in to nightlife on the islands, or to stay in crowded resorts. The more touristy an island is the more mentions it will get as 'the best' (and rocketing prices). Route 2) is much less popular but that is not on the basis of merit. Route 1) has been a main tourist route for over 30 years. In the Cyclades two of those routes are roughly.ġ) Piraeus > Paros > Naxos > Ios > Santorini.Ģ) Piraeus > Kythnos > Serifos > Sifnos > Milos/Kimolos > Folegandros > Sikinos > Ios > Santorini. The principle is to choose islands down main ferry routes for ease of travel. Paros -> Serifos/Sifnos -> Milos -> Athens.

>It’s our first time to Greece and I’m struggling with the ferries and understanding how to maximise travel time. I would be grateful for your feedback on how to schedule these islands, areas to stay (we may hire a car or scooter if it’s advised) or even other islands. We aren’t interested in the tourist crowds of Mykonos or Santorini but are happy to be convinced otherwise! Our normal travel rule of thumb is minimum 4 nights so we do like to relax and immerse ourselves with the locals. Paros, milos and Sefinos are our current picks but I’m struggling with understanding ferries and which order (or if we should do others). We were thinking of 3 islands max for 4 nights each but happy to do less. We fly in on 14 June (to Athens or an island - not booked yet) and leave Athens on the night of 28th but would like 2 days there at least. We like boating and are foodies - enjoy the beach but not all day. My husband and I are in our mid 40s and looking for a slower paced authentic (as much as possible) experience - beach reataurants, quaint villages, some relaxed early evening nightlife but no partying.
